Scenario A: Replacing a Single Capital Device

This is the most common situation I help with. You already have a device, it's end of life, and you need to replace it. The temptation is to compare features on paper. Don't start there.

Start with the compatibility list. Ask the Conmed rep for the accessory matrix for the new model. Compare it to what you already own: cables, foot pedals, electrodes, smoke evacuation components, mounting arms. If the new model doesn't work with something you have, that cost belongs in the project budget.

I would also ask about the upgrade path. I know it feels early, but the next model's release cycle can change the decision. I've watched someone buy a capital system a month before the manufacturer released a version that solved their biggest complaint. That's a hard way to learn a simple question: what's coming next, and can you give me a rough sense of timing?

Scenario B: Outfitting a New Surgery Center

This is where the budget is often the largest, and the mistakes are often the most expensive. I helped open an outpatient center where the clinical director wanted a broad Conmed portfolio. AirSeal, electrosurgery, monitoring, sports medicine instruments. The result was an OR that looked impressive but had advanced features almost nobody used in the first year.

If I were doing it again, I would ask one question first: what is the first-year procedure mix? Then buy for that mix, plus one deliberate expansion slot. It sounds conservative, but it's actually more efficient. A new platform doesn't help if the team isn't ready for it.

And put installation time and staff training in the budget. It's not as exciting as a device, but downtime in a new center is brutal.

Scenario C: Standardizing Across a Multi-Site Health System

This is the hardest one. In theory, standardization means fewer vendors, better pricing, and simpler training. In practice, it means a lot of clinicians have opinions, and not all of them are wrong.

Here's the contrarian advice: do not make standardization about the logo. Standardize on the interfaces, connection standards, training requirements, and service response process. If the same return electrode cable can work across sites, that matters more than whether the generator is from one brand or another. If you're already a Conmed shop, that's a good reason to stay with Conmed, not because it's the best brand, but because switching creates training and compatibility costs.

The mistake I see in scenario C is choosing one vendor for everything just to simplify the contract. That can leave you with a monitoring system that doesn't talk to your EMR, or a surgical platform without a regional service technician. Get integration questions answered before you sign.

How to Tell Which Scenario You're In

This part is simpler than it feels.

If you're replacing a device that already exists and you have accessories in inventory, you're in scenario A. The question is not what's the best device. It's what can we integrate with the least disruption?

If you're building a new space or adding a service line, you're in scenario B. The question is what do we need for the procedures we'll actually do in year one?

If you're trying to reduce variation across sites, you're in scenario C. The question is which decisions should be centralized, and which should stay local?

If you're still unsure, ask yourself: are we solving a broken piece, a new space, or an inconsistency problem? The answer will route you better than any product review.

A Note on IV Catheters and Dental Loupes

I often see search traffic around IV catheters and dental loupes. Let me separate those quickly.

For IV catheters, the same total system rule applies. It's easy to focus on how a catheter feels or how well it shows flashback. But if you're buying for a hospital, you need to know whether the same product line is available in the sizes and quantities you need, whether it's compatible with the IV access sets you use, and whether the supply chain is reliable. I've seen a lower price per unit get wiped out by backorders and overnight freight.

As for dental loupes, I don't think Conmed makes them. If you found this article through that search, you're probably looking at a different category. Dental loupe buying has a lesson of its own: don't choose based on one glowing recommendation. Try the working distance, the angle, and the weight before you buy. It's a product that lives on your face, so the spec sheet matters less than the fit.

The Checklist I Use Now

This list is not a work of art. But it has caught potential problems before they became purchase orders.

  1. Define the problem: replacement, new build, or standardization?
  2. Get the official compatibility matrix for every Conmed device I'm considering.
  3. Review the plan with the person who actually uses the product in an OR.
  4. Ask about service response and upgrade path, not just price.
