- Downtime risk – what happens when a device fails mid-surgery?
The principle applies beyond electrosurgery. For example, when evaluating a defibrillator, you need to think about battery life, electrode pad compatibility, and how many staff need training. The same goes for nebulizers: the machine might be cheap, but replacement filters and tubing could eat your budget.
What I Learned (the Hard Way)
I still kick myself for not calculating TCO before that first Conmed order. If I'd spent a day getting quotes for training and service, I could have saved $12,000—and a lot of embarrassment.
Now I maintain a pre-purchase checklist for my team. Before any equipment order, we verify:

I'm not saying Conmed makes bad products. The Hyfrecator 2000 is a capable device. But capable doesn't mean cost-effective unless you account for everything around it.
