  6. Downtime risk – what happens when a device fails mid-surgery?

The principle applies beyond electrosurgery. For example, when evaluating a defibrillator, you need to think about battery life, electrode pad compatibility, and how many staff need training. The same goes for nebulizers: the machine might be cheap, but replacement filters and tubing could eat your budget.

What I Learned (the Hard Way)

I still kick myself for not calculating TCO before that first Conmed order. If I'd spent a day getting quotes for training and service, I could have saved $12,000—and a lot of embarrassment.

Now I maintain a pre-purchase checklist for my team. Before any equipment order, we verify:

  • Full documentation availability (user manual, quick reference card)
  • Training package details (on-site vs. remote, cost per session)
  • Service contract options (response time, parts availability)
  • Consumable pricing comparison (at least three vendors)
  • Regulatory compliance (FDA clearance, specific to device class)

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), claims about medical device efficacy and safety must be substantiated. That's a reminder: don't rely on marketing brochures. Ask for the data.

I'm not saying Conmed makes bad products. The Hyfrecator 2000 is a capable device. But capable doesn't mean cost-effective unless you account for everything around it.

If you're shopping for surgical equipment—whether it's an air seal system, a patient monitor, or even something as common as a nebulizer—take the time to map out the total cost. You'll sleep better, and your CFO will thank you.
